Okay, so the little one decided on an “under the sea” theme for their party. My first thought was, “Great, how am I gonna pull off food for that?” You see these amazing pictures online, but let’s be real, I’m not a professional food artist, and I don’t have days to prep.

Getting the Ideas Straight
So, I started by thinking what “under the sea” could even mean for kid food. My brain immediately went to complicated stuff. Like, should I try carving dolphins out of melons? Or making intricate little seashell cookies? Yeah, no. That was way too much fuss. I knew if I went down that road, I’d be stressed out, and the kids probably wouldn’t even appreciate the finer details. They just want stuff that looks fun and tastes good.
I had to dial it back. Way back. I thought about what kids actually eat and enjoy. Hot dogs, little sandwiches, sweet treats. That seemed like a much better starting point. Then, it was all about how to spin those everyday foods into something that screamed “ocean.” This is where the real fun, and a bit of messy work, began.
Diving into the Kitchen: What I Made
I settled on a few things that I figured would be a hit and wouldn’t take me forever to make. Here’s what I ended up doing:
- Octopus Hot Dogs: This was a must. Super easy. I just took regular hot dogs. Before cooking, I sliced the bottom half of each one lengthwise, about four times, to make eight little “tentacles.” Then I boiled them. As they cooked, the tentacles curled up. Looked just like little octopuses! I used some edible marker dots for eyes once they cooled a bit, but honestly, they looked cool even without. These were a massive hit, gone in minutes.
- Crabby Croissants: I got a pack of those small, plain croissants. For the eyes, I stuck candy eyeballs (the ones you get in the baking aisle) onto toothpicks and poked them into the top of the croissants. Then, for claws, I used pieces of red bell pepper. I just cut them into little pincer shapes and stuck them into the sides of the croissants. They looked surprisingly crab-like! I thought about using carrots, but my kid isn’t a fan, so bell peppers it was.
- Blue Ocean Jello: Can’t have an under the sea party without some blue “water”! I made a big batch of blue raspberry Jello. The trick was getting the gummy fish to look like they were swimming. I let the Jello set just a tiny bit in clear plastic cups, then I pushed the gummy fish in. Some still sank, a few floated near the top. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the job. I also crushed up some digestive biscuits to make “sand” and sprinkled that on the plate next to the Jello cups.
- Seaweed Veggie Sticks: Okay, this was a bit of a cheat, but it worked. I got some green veggies – cucumber sticks, green bell pepper strips. I just arranged them on a platter and called them “seaweed.” Served it with a simple ranch dip. You’d be surprised what kids will eat if you give it a fun name.
Bringing It All Together
Actually making the food wasn’t too bad once I had the ideas locked down. The octopus hot dogs were definitely the easiest and got the best reaction. The crabby croissants took a little more fiddling with the eyes and claws, but they looked pretty cute. The Jello was just a waiting game for it to set.
When it was time to serve, I laid out a blue tablecloth to set the “ocean” scene. I scattered a few plastic seashells I had from a craft store around the food platters. It wasn’t super fancy, you know? Some of my crab eyes were a bit crooked, and not all the Jello fish were perfectly suspended. But it was homemade, and it looked fun.

The best part? The kids went nuts for it. They loved pointing out the octopuses and the crabs. Even the “seaweed” got eaten! It just goes to show, you don’t need to be a gourmet chef to make fun party food. A bit of creativity with simple things can go a long, long way. That was my adventure with under the sea party food. It was a bit of work, sure, but seeing their faces made it totally worth it.
