Okay, so I tried making that golden tulip dim sum thing today. It looked so pretty in the pictures, you know? I figured, how hard could it be? Famous last words, right?
First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. The recipe I found called for ground pork, some veggies like carrots and cabbage, and those little wonton wrappers. I even got some food coloring to make the “tulips” look all fancy.
I started by mixing the pork with the chopped veggies and some soy sauce and stuff. That part was easy, just smash it all together in a bowl. The hard part was making the actual tulips.
- I put a little bit of the pork mixture in the middle of a wonton wrapper.
- Then, I tried to pinch the edges together to make it look like a flower.
- It was a mess. They just looked like weird, lumpy blobs.
Coloring the “Tulips”
I decided to move on to the coloring part, hoping that would make them look better. I mixed some red and yellow food coloring with water, like the recipe said. I carefully dipped each sad little dumpling into the color, but it just made them look even worse. They were all streaky and uneven, not at all like the perfect golden tulips I saw online.
I steamed them anyway, even though they looked terrible. I figured maybe they’d taste good even if they were ugly. Nope. They were bland and mushy, and the food coloring had this weird, chemical taste.
So, yeah, my golden tulip dim sum was a total fail. It was a lot more work than I expected, and the results were definitely not worth it. I think I’ll just stick to ordering dim sum from now on. I ended up throwing most of it away and ordered takeout. Definitely not my finest moment in the kitchen!
