Okay, let’s talk about making some quick food.
So, the other day, I needed something fast. Really fast. Didn’t have much time, you know how it is. Stomach’s rumbling, but the clock’s ticking. I remembered seeing something about Jamie Oliver, that chef guy, and how he does quick, easy stuff. One thing that popped into my head was his steak sandwich, or ‘sarnie’ as he calls it. Seemed simple enough.

First thing, I checked the fridge. Did I even have steak? Lucky break, found a couple of thin-cut steaks I bought earlier. Not the fanciest cut, mind you, just regular supermarket stuff. Good enough for a quick bite.
Getting things ready.
Right, pulled out the steak. Let it sit on the counter for a bit, just to get the chill off. They say you should do that. While it was sitting, I grabbed other bits. Needed bread, obviously. Found some decent sourdough slices, perfect. An onion, half a red one was lurking in the veggie drawer. Bit of olive oil, salt, pepper. That’s it. Keeping it simple, like the idea suggested.
Cooking time.
Got my trusty frying pan, put it on the heat. High heat. Let it get really hot. You want that sizzle when the steak hits it. While the pan was heating, I quickly sliced the onion. Not too thin, not too thick. Rubbed a tiny bit of olive oil on the steaks, then seasoned them well with salt and pepper. Just rubbed it in with my fingers.

Pan’s smoking hot now. Good. Carefully laid the steaks in. Sizzled like crazy, which is what I wanted. The smell immediately filled the kitchen. Didn’t touch them for like, a minute? Maybe a bit more. Wanted a good sear. Flipped them over. Cooked the other side for another minute or so. These were thin, so they cook super fast. You gotta watch ’em. Took the steaks out, put them on a plate to rest. This resting part is important, apparently. Keeps them juicy.
While the steak was resting, I threw the sliced onions into the same pan. Still had all those steak juices in there. Stirred them around for a couple of minutes until they softened up and got a bit charred. Perfect. Took those out.
Putting it all together.
Steak’s rested now. Sliced it up against the grain. Looked pretty good inside, nice and pink. Grabbed my bread slices. Didn’t even toast them, couldn’t be bothered. Piled the sliced steak onto one slice. Topped it with those cooked onions. Put the other slice of bread on top. Pressed it down a bit.
And that was basically it. A steak sarnie, done and dusted. Took maybe, what, 15 minutes from start to finish? Maybe 20 if you count finding the stuff.

The result?
Honestly, it was pretty tasty. For something so quick, it hit the spot. The steak was tender enough, the onions added a nice sweetness. Nothing fancy, but it was proper food, made fast. Definitely quicker than ordering takeout. It really was just grabbing a few things, quick cook, slap it together. Worked out well. Would I do it again when I’m in a rush? Yeah, absolutely. Simple, quick, job done.
