So, had a few friends popping over last weekend, and you know how it is – gotta have some grub. I wasn’t aiming for anything fancy, just some basic party food that everyone can dig into. Keep it simple, that’s my approach, always has been.

First off, I had to wrack my brain a bit. What’s easy and a crowd-pleaser? My go-to list usually looks something like this:
- Chips and dip – a non-negotiable, really.
- Some kind of mini sausage or cocktail wieners.
- Veggie sticks, because someone always pretends to be healthy.
- Maybe a bit of fruit to balance things out.
Nothing groundbreaking, see? Just the reliable stuff.
Then it was off to the supermarket. Had my list, felt pretty organized. Of course, a bag of cheese puffs somehow jumped into the cart. And those little pretzel bites. Happens every time. I try to be disciplined, but the snack aisle, man, it’s a battlefield.
Getting the Prep Done
Back in the kitchen, I got started. I usually tackle the cold stuff first. Washed a bunch of carrots and cucumbers, grabbed some bell peppers too. Chopped them all into sticks. No perfect cuts here, just get ’em done. Arranged them on a platter with a tub of hummus I’d bought. Looked alright, for minimal effort.
Next up, the dips. Couldn’t be easier. Salsa into one bowl, sour cream into another. Sometimes I’ll get adventurous and mix some onion soup powder into the sour cream, but this time, nah. Straight out of the tubs. People aren’t coming for a gourmet experience, are they?

Warm Bites and Other Bits
For the hot food, I went with those little cocktail sausages. You just can’t go wrong. Spread ’em on a baking tray, whacked ’em in the oven. Set a timer and pretty much forgot about them until it beeped. Easy peasy.
I also grabbed a big bag of tortilla chips – the cornerstone of any basic party food spread, if you ask me. Poured those into my biggest bowl. Job done. And those cheese puffs? Another bowl. Simple.
Oh, and fruit! Almost forgot. Washed a load of grapes, sliced up an apple. Put it on a separate plate. It always gets eaten, surprisingly. Makes people feel a bit virtuous, I think, reaching for a grape after a handful of chips.
The Grand Setup (Well, Sort Of)
Once everything was ready, it was just a case of putting it all out. Spread the platters and bowls on the coffee table. Made sure there were plenty of napkins. Nothing too strategic about the placement, just as long as people could reach things without knocking stuff over. That’s the main goal.
And that was that. Basic party food, sorted. Everyone turned up, they ate, they chatted. Food disappeared, which is always a good sign. No Michelin stars awarded, but hey, it was easy, relatively cheap, and no one went hungry. That’s a win in my book. Sometimes, just doing the basics well is all you need.
