So, I was staring into my pantry today, you know, that usual ‘what on earth am I going to eat’ moment. And then it hit me – hummus! But the thought of going to the store and paying too much for a tiny tub of the decent stuff, or getting that bland, watery kind? Nah. Decided I’d just whip some up myself. Figured it couldn’t be that hard, right?

Getting the Bits Together
First thing, I grabbed a can of chickpeas. Honestly, canned is the way to go if you’re not trying to win any awards for authenticity and just want food, like, now. Drained those suckers and gave them a good rinse under the tap. Got to get that weird can-slime off. Then, tahini. I’ve got this big jar that’s always a pain to stir because the oil separates, but it’s essential. So, I wrestled with that for a bit.
Next up, garlic. I just peeled a couple of cloves. I didn’t even bother chopping them too fine because, hey, that’s what the food processor is for. And lemon! Squeezed half a lemon. Fresh is always better than that squeezy bottle stuff, trust me on that. A splash of olive oil, some salt – nothing fancy, just the basics.
The Making Of (and the usual drama)
Okay, so I chucked everything into my trusty old food processor. The chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, salt. And a little bit of cold water – I heard that makes it fluffier. Put the lid on, held my breath a little, and hit the power button.
At first, it was just a noisy, chunky mess. Typical. It always looks like it’s not going to work. I scraped down the sides with a spatula, added another tiny splash of water, and let it whizz again. And again. You gotta be patient with these things. After a few minutes of on-and-off blending, and a bit more scraping, it finally started to look like actual hummus. Smooth, creamy – pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Then came the tasting. Dipped a spoon in. Hmm. Not bad. Not bad at all. Maybe a tiny bit more salt? Yep. Another pinch. Whizzed it one last time. Perfect. Or, well, perfect for a Tuesday afternoon homemade job.

And… Done!
I scooped it all out into a bowl. It looked pretty decent! Way better than that sad stuff you sometimes get. I drizzled a bit more olive oil on top – because you just have to, don’t you? – and was tempted to sprinkle some paprika, but I was hungry. So, I just grabbed some pita bread I had lying around and dug in.
Honestly, it was surprisingly quick. And definitely easy. Less faff than I remembered from previous attempts, probably because I didn’t overthink it. Will I do it again? Yeah, for sure. Beats standing in the supermarket aisle wondering which overpriced tub to buy.
