Alright, so the Oscars were rolling around again, and I thought, why not have a few people over? Make it a bit of an event. But you can’t just have regular chips and dip for an Oscar party, gotta have some fun with it, right? So I decided to try my hand at some themed food.

Getting the Ideas Together
First, I just kinda brainstormed what screams “Oscars”. Gold, obviously. Statues, stars, movie reels, fancy stuff. I didn’t want anything too complicated because, let’s be honest, I wanted to watch the show too, not spend the whole night in the kitchen. I scrolled through some ideas online, got inspired, and then settled on a few things I thought I could actually pull off.
Hitting the Shops
Made a list. Needed stuff for popcorn, some cookie decorations, bread, fillings, the usual suspects. The key was finding some ‘gold’ stuff. Found edible gold spray paint – game changer! Also grabbed some black icing and basic sugar cookies because I wasn’t about to bake from scratch on a Sunday night. Picked up different types of bread and fillings for variety.
Making the Magic Happen
Okay, first up, the easiest one: Golden Popcorn.
- Popped a huge bowl of plain popcorn.
- Melted some butter, drizzled it over, gave it a good toss.
- Then came the fun part. Took that edible gold spray and went to town. Just sprayed it lightly all over the popcorn while tossing it a bit. It actually looked pretty cool and sparkly under the lights. Simple, but effective.
Next, I tackled the Film Reel Cookies.
- Laid out the store-bought round sugar cookies.
- Used black decorating icing – the kind in a tube – to pipe a circle around the edge of each cookie.
- Piped another smaller black circle in the very center.
- Let those dry for a little bit so they wouldn’t smudge.
- Then, used white icing to make tiny dots around the inner edge of the big black circle, trying to make them look like the sprocket holes on film. This was a bit fiddly, not gonna lie. Some looked better than others, but you got the idea.
Finally, the savory bit: Walk of Fame Star Sandwiches.

- Made a few different types of simple sandwiches – ham and cheese, turkey and swiss, cucumber and cream cheese. Used white and whole wheat bread.
- Then, just took a star-shaped cookie cutter and punched out stars from the sandwiches.
- Arranged these on a platter. Super easy, minimal effort, maximum theme points. Plus, no crusts!
Showtime!
I laid everything out on the coffee table just before people started showing up. The golden popcorn was in a big glass bowl, the cookies were on a tiered stand, and the star sandwiches were lined up on a platter. It actually looked pretty decent! Not super fancy, but definitely festive and on-theme.
People seemed to like it. The popcorn was a hit, probably because it looked cool. The cookies disappeared pretty quickly too, despite my slightly wobbly piping. And the sandwiches were gone in minutes – guess people like bite-sized stuff. It was fun munching on everything while watching the show and judging the dresses. Didn’t take too much effort, and it added a nice touch to the whole evening. I’d probably do the popcorn and sandwiches again for sure; the cookies maybe if I felt patient.
