Okay, so I gotta share this. My typing? It was bad. Like, really bad. Hunt and peck style, looking down all the time, super slow. It was getting annoying, honestly. Watching other folks type like lightning made me feel kinda dumb.

So, I decided, that’s it, I need to fix this. Started looking around online, you know, just searching for stuff like “learn typing fast”. Saw a bunch of websites and apps pop up. Some names I remember seeing were things like TypingClub, maybe Keybr? There were a few others too, like one called Monkeytype that looked kinda cool, and another, Ratatype, seemed like it had lessons or something.
Getting Started
I didn’t want anything too complicated. Just something simple to get me going. I downloaded one, can’t even remember the exact name now, but it looked pretty basic. It started me off with the home row keys, you know, ASDF JKL;. Felt super weird at first. My fingers just didn’t want to stay put.
- First few tries? Total disaster. Made tons of mistakes.
- Felt really awkward keeping my eyes on the screen instead of the keyboard.
- The app showed which finger should hit which key. That helped a bit.
The Practice Grind
I tried to make myself practice a little bit every day. Just like 10 or 15 minutes. Didn’t want to burn out. Some days I’d do the lessons, just typing random letter combinations. Other days, I’d try the typing tests to see if I was getting any faster. Progress was slow, man. Really slow.
There were times I wanted to just give up and go back to my old bad habits. It’s easier, right? But I stuck with it. Kept telling myself it’d be worth it. The app I used had these little progress charts, which was kinda motivating, seeing the speed number go up, even if it was just by one or two words per minute.
I remember trying another site too, maybe it was or something similar. They had games which made it a bit less boring. Competing against others, even just bots, pushed me a little harder.

Where I Am Now
So, after doing this for a while… it actually worked! I’m not like a super-speed demon now, don’t get me wrong. But I can type without looking down most of the time. My fingers kinda know where to go now. It feels way more natural.
The biggest thing? I make way fewer mistakes. And yeah, I’m definitely faster. Writing emails, documents, even just chatting online is less of a chore. It’s pretty cool, actually. Didn’t think I could really change how I typed after all these years, but turns out, with a simple app and a bit of regular effort, you totally can. It wasn’t magic, just needed to actually sit down and do it.
